Travel insurance for over 65s

  • Published on

Over 65? Struggling to find insurance? You’re not alone. Despite the fact that this is one of the fastest growing areas of the travel insurance market, more and more over 65s are travelling well past retirement age and select travel insurers may offer insurance for this age group. While it used to be the commonly held belief that life slowed down after 60, nowadays this couldn’t be further from the truth! With more people living longer, healthier lives than ever before it’s no wonder that many over 65 year old’s are taking the opportunity to travel in their post-retirement years.

Struggling to find insurance for over 65’s?

With retirement comes more free time and freedom, enabling you to visit those dream destinations on your travel wish list; perhaps you’re looking at spending some of your hard earned retirement funds on some travel luxuries. However, travel insurance shouldn’t come under the description of a luxury, and with some insurers doubling premiums for over 65 year olds, unfortunately it can be a major cost to consider in your travel budget.

Where to find insurance for older travellers

There are ways to find good quality, affordable travel insurance for over 65s. A good place to start is to look at specialist insurers who have a focus on older travellers or travellers with pre-existing medical conditions.

Whilst many older people are in better health than some younger travellers, over 65 year old’s tend to suffer from common pre-existing medical conditions. If you do have a medical condition then you will need to declare it to your insurer.

ERGO Medicare offer a variety of options if you are travelling with someone who needs a policy to travel with a medical condition. If you or your travel companion has a medical condition you can still buy a couples policy, which will take into consideration which members of your party have a pre-existing health condition. This makes it easy to purchase insurance together and not have to worry about having a number of different policies.

This to consider when choosing your policy

When looking for insurance it’s important to think about the best type of insurance policy for you:

  • If you’re planning on taking more than one trip a year, then an annual multi-trip policy may work out cheaper in the long run.
  • Similarly, think about where you want to travel. If you know you only want to travel within Europe then you won’t need pay the extra for a world-wide policy, but if you are considering other a long-haul trips, then an annual world-wide policy could give you flexibility in your travel plans and possible destinations.
  • If you are planning on taking a cruise, then it’s a good idea to research cruise insurance policies, as these often have higher age limits than standard travel insurance.
  • Check which activities will be covered under your policy. If you’re an active over 65 year old, you need to make sure any extreme activities you may want to try are covered under your policy.

ERGO understands that travel insurance should help you to get out there, whatever your age, so our ERGO Leisure policy covers travellers up to the age of 74, whilst our Medi-Care policies cover those up to 84 and can even cover many medical conditions that might have meant you’d been refused cover elsewhere.
